The Texas historical landmark will open this month.

DALLAS — With the completion of repairs and renovations, the Juanita J. Craft Civil Rights House will soon be open again for visitors. The Texas historical landmark pays homage to the civil rights icon, who worked across the state to improve the quality of life of the disenfranchised.

Most notably known for her role in integrating the Texas State Fair, as well as universities, lunch counters, restaurants and theaters, Craft also made history as the first Black woman deputized as a poll tax collector. She even served on the Dallas City Council. She dedicated herself to the youth in her community as well by turning her Craftsman Bungalow-style home at 2618 Warren Avenue in South Dallas into a place for education.

In 2018, efforts to restore the home hit a roadblock when pipes burst, causing extensive water damage. In 2021, the Junior League of Dallas announced the Juanita J. Craft House as its centennial project, committing to raise funds to complete the rehabilitation of the home. A few years later, in 2022, the Dallas City Council approved the construction contract, paving the way for $1.1 million to be used for interior and exterior restoration.
