During Lent are there ways we might increase our focus on faith? There always seems to be some tension between the law and faith. Legalism is both comforting and binding, yet we seem to gravitate to it regularly. In our efforts to maintain our relationship with God, it would be much easier if it were simply about rules.
Beginning to look at our faith as a community or family process calls us out of individual piety and keeps us aware of, but unlimited by a legalistic perspective. When we remember the stories of our ancestors in faith, we are able to see that God has been able to use his family for his purposes, even when they have colored outside the lines or on the wrong page altogether.
As we approach Easter, it is important for us to remember that though many things separate us within our Christian community, faith is able to unite. God has a history of saving the marginalized and showing disappointment toward those that are “religiously righteous.”
