Three large wildfires in New Jersey this month have been part of a fire season this has been 'busy, but not historic'
Township were by far the largest among the 517 fires that have burned 7,608 acres in the state, officials said Tuesday.
“The general sense is that fire season is summer,” McLaughlin said in a conference call with reporters Tuesday. “Fire season is now. It’s a busy, active fire season, but it’s not historic.” The largest of the fires — a 3,859 acre blaze in Manchester on federal, state and private property — is also being investigated by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office.Officials from those agencies are working to pinpoint where the fire originated, according to McLaughlin.
Very dry conditions so far this year, a lack of snowfall during the winter and an extended warm season brought on by climate change have contributed to the higher than normal number of fires this year, the Forest Fire Service said.
