The flurries that fell Wednesday were most likely graupel, meteorologists say, but Disneyland fans reported snow on social media. ‘My jaw is on the floor,’ said one parkgoer.
A brief burst of hail followed by a dusting of snow surprised Disneyland visitors who were prepared for the chance of rain under cloudy blue skies and the possibility of fake snow during the evening fireworks show.
Disneyland became a winter wonderland on Wednesday, March 1 as hail and then snow fell on the Anaheim theme park in the middle of the afternoon, according to social media posts. NBC Los Angeles meteorologist David Biggar says the hail and snow hitting Southern California is likely graupel — the official name for the soft hail or snow pellets that form when water droplets attach to snowflakes as they travel through clouds.
“Low freezing level means we have a greater chance of seeing some hail or graupel from the showers across our region,” Biggar wrote on Twitter. “Both hail and graupel are often mistaken for snow.”blogger Mike Celestino posted a video to Twitter of snow falling in front of the Mickey floral portrait at the entrance to Disneyland.
“It’s snowing at Disneyland in Anaheim,” Celestino said in clear bewilderment on the video. “It was hail a minute ago in Downtown Disney. I’m going to call this snow.”
