Randall Stephenson’s good deed for PGA Tour and American golf | Opinion

His resignation letter was also delivered Saturday. Today, a Senate subcommittee investigating the surprise merger deal is expected to hear testimony from PGA Tour officials. The timing isn’t a coincidence.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which would underwrite the merger, is undertaking a broad effort to clean up the kingdom’s international image for human rights abuses through investments in professional sports. It’s already made inroads in Formula One racing, horse racing, soccer and wrestling, among other ventures. But the PGA Tour would be, by far, its most significant get.

No doubt that’s true. And it’s hard to imagine a single pot of money that speaks as loudly as the Saudis’ $700 billion Public Investment Fund. But this still isn’t a done deal. The dotted line isn’t signed. Congress is concerned. The word “antitrust” is being thrown around.
