The display was replenished by Pride-related books from the branch and others, after a protest that also prompted cash and book donations from the community

Rancho Peñasquitos Library officials have revived a Pride exhibit that was ruined last month by protesters who checked out nearly all the books in the display and vowed to keep them, calling them inappropriate for children.

The branch has also received dozens of donated books related to Pride and roughly $6,000 in cash donations since the anti-LGBTQ+ protest got significant news coverage in late June.Councilmember Marni von Wilpert has also been working with the San Diego Library Foundation on collecting donations to replace the checked-out books.

County spokesperson Michael Workman said there haven’t been any organized protests at county branches this summer, but he said there have been scattered complaints and backlash. The Peñasquitos protestors, neighborhood residents Amy Vance and Martha Martin, said libraries are open, public spaces for children that should be free of references to gender identity and sexual attraction.
