With fresh interviews (and embarrassing archival footage), ’Banished: Prince Andrew’ is less a bombshell exposé than an illuminating look at this generation’s most disgraced member of the British royal family.
Even rabid royal watchers might be surprised to see some of the eye-popping interviews and media coverage featured in the doc. A brief sampling: There’s footage of Andrew visiting a Los Angeles housing project in the ’80s only to go rogue, pick up a paint gun, and startthe reporters covering his trip.
“Often you imagine that the contemporary story is where you’re going to find really fascinating stuff,” says Crawford. “Actually [] is reverse in a way—it starts with the contemporary story that everybody knows. But the really fascinating stuff in this project is his life leading up to that.” Even Crawford was shocked to see how different the prince’s reputation was decades ago—before the dodgy business deals,scandals, and friendship with Epstein.
