The Land Trust of North Alabama is working to preserve Paint Rock River.
North Alabama’s Paint Rock River is one of the Southeast’s last free-flowing and biologically diverse rivers, and conservationists are racing a deadline to preserve part of it next door to Huntsville.
The Land Trust of North Alabama says it has an opportunity to buy a 92-acre property in Jackson County next door to Madison County that includes about 2/3 mile of Paint Rock River frontage. The land price is $223,000, and donors have pledged $107,335 so far. That leaves another $115,665 still needed by Nov. 1.
The property is used mainly as lowland farmland now and is part of a Conservation Reserve Program. Trees have been preserved or planted alongside the river to buffer erosion and runoff. The Land Trust said it would “maintain this buffer and agricultural use.” It would not be agricultural forever, however. Long-term plans call for wetland restoration to return the land to its natural bottomland hardwood forest. Agricultural use would stop to enhance wildlife habitat and production of the river
