One of the most anticipated acts was M.I.A., a British rapper with Sri Lankan roots who was responsible for massively popular singles like"Paper Planes" and"Bad Girls." Last week, sheToday Goldenvoice officially announced that she would be replaced by electronic musician Daniel Lopatin, who performs under the moniker Oneohtrix Point Never.
Lopatin is known for creating unique soundscapes that mix field recordings with experimental synthesizer tones. Sometimes that results in beautiful ambient orchestrations, but many of his songs are more abrasive, spiraling into harsh noise territory. Although he has yet to have a major crossover hit of his own, Lopatin has put his stamp on pop culture through his collaborations. His tense score to the 2019 movie"Uncut Gems" was one of the most notable aspects of the film. He has also worked repeatedly with the Weeknd, writing and producing 11 songs off of"Dawn FM" and serving as musical director for the pop star's Super Bowl halftime show.
