Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin's education campaign mapped out a successful path to office, but teachers worry political promises won't do enough for schools.
But it wasn't just Youngkin's promise to parents that they had the right to influence public education that centered the race on Virginia's schools, it was also McAuliffe's stark opposition to that perspective.who cast their ballots in the final week of voting, McAullife's statement,"I don't think parents should be telling schools what they should teach" played a major factor in their vote.
Teachers may feel wary about the national discussion on topics like critical race theory in classrooms, but their hesitations don't necessarily signal support for curriculums that focus on systemic racism. When the schools across the U.S. shuttered and moved to remote learning in response to the pandemic, homes became classrooms and many parents gained access to their children's schooling in ways that hadn't been seen before.
The pandemic, then, has encouraged many American parents to take a more active role in their kids' education. That momentum most poignantly spurred a wave of changes across many school boards and sparked a barrage of public comments demanding districts immediately address parental concerns. Despite the challenges a freshly invigorated group of parents may bring, Sharkey emphasized that it's important for teachers to engage with parents rather than avoid those conversations.
Siding with parents who want to keep schools open, Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot has faced two labor disputes with city's teachers' union over the last year. Lightfoot talks to students affected by the CPS work stoppage on the first day of strike by the Chicago Teachers Union at the McCormick YMCA of Metro on October 17 2019 in Chicago.
