More than 50 people came out to Harris AME Zion Church in Harrisburg on Thursday evening to hear from a developer who is proposing to build a mixed-use, affordable housing community where the Woodward Elementary School once stood.

at 1001 N. 18th St. The building would also include retail, a daycare and other offerings.

“We’re not doing that,” Williams said before rattling off a list of several proposed housing properties around the city.“When I heard about a mixed-use building,” she said, “I’m just like I don’t think we need more of that. It invites more things like crime.” George Fernandez, CEO of the Fernandez Realty Group and Affordable Homes, said he has been talking with the Harrisburg School District for the past nine months.

Woodward Lofts would include 48 open-loft-style one-bedroom apartments; a 6,390-square-foot on-site daycare with a playground; a 3,376-square-foot building support space that would include a food bank, clothing bank, a community room and a leasing office; a 4,340-square-foot retail space; a 1,000-square-foot play space and a 1,500-square-foot rain garden for free vegetables and produce. There would be 37 parking spaces.
