It’s a new season at Wild Horse Pass, but on Saturday night, the story was entirely familiar.
“It's pretty awesome,” Schantz said of the early goal. “… Manu was there and threw his body into it. I'm super happy for him. I had a good chat with Madrid last night and told him how excited I was. I said he would be great today and he didn't let me down.
In the 26th minute, Phoenix striker Greg Hurst — one of four new starters this season — won the ball in the final third, taking advantage of Monterey Bay’s attacking disposition. After a perfectly orchestrated sequence of quick passing on the right wing, Rising midfielder Aodhan Quinn found an unmarked Hurst in the box. Hurst, who scored 14 goals in 30 games for Union Omaha a year ago, made no mistake, slotting past goalkeeper Rafael Diaz from 12 yards.
The fourth goal wasn’t much tougher. Center-back Joey Farrell played a long diagonal switch over the top for winger Santi Moar to flick on into Quinn’s path. With no defender within five yards, Quinn calmly chipped Diaz, setting off a fourth set of red smoke bombs in the south end before Monterey Bay could be saved by the grace of halftime.
