Having endured the suicide of three siblings, Dolan’s first major initiative as bishop has been forming a mental health ministry aimed at motivating the Catholic faithful on an issue that has previously engendered trepidation within the church.

“People with mental health aren’t possessed – they’re oppressed,” said Dolan, who speaks in a calm and measured voice.Touted as a Catholic Church first, the mental health ministry will officially launch Tuesday at the Diocesan Pastoral Center in downtown Phoenix. The ministry will not diagnose or treat mental health.
Those deaths rocked Dolan with anger, he said. The sentiment is common among those who see a loved one perish to suicide, he said. Feeling like that is OK to Dolan.“God’s big enough to handle our anger,” Dolan said. “When you lose someone, it’s good to talk about it and not to hold it in. And even though you may have to look at the wound again a few times, it’s just important to do it because otherwise there’s no healing involved and it just gets trapped, and later on, it’s going to fester,” he said.
According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, the state’s suicide rate per 100,000 people in 2021 was“We have individuals who are within our diocese that have struggled with these particular issues and may not have had an opportunity or place where they could talk about it from their faith,” she said. “By him being the leader and taking this particular subject on, it really helps to give permission to talk about mental health in a different way.
