Death, taxes and the 49ers being connected with a veteran quarterback.
The Niners certainly could have used a contingency plan, but that can only be said with the benefit of hindsight. While the team did lose two starters in the regular season, Brock Purdy's incredible play meant he was more than deserving of the confidence the team had in him. Nobody could have possibly predicted the season would end in the NFC title game the way that it did, and even if the team had Rivers, there's no guarantee his performance would have been lifesaving against Philly.
As for whether Rivers will ever return now, he added,"I think in my mind in the last couple of years if a team had needed me, I might have had six or eight games left in me, but I’m not going into this fall thinking the same. I think it's done."
