The PGA Tour disclosed in its 2021 tax filings that commissioner Jay Monahan flies on private jets for all of his personal and business travel, and that the nonprofit golf league also may offer personal travel on private jets to other top officials.
The new disclosures contrasted with prior years, when the Tour had said that in “limited cases,” top executives “may utilize charter or first class travel for business,” citing security, privacy or efficiency reasons. The prior filings made no mention of any personal private-jet travel provided by the nonprofit.in The Wall Street Journal that revealed numerous personal trips in recent years by Monahan on a Citation X jet owned by a Tour subsidiary. Those included travel to Nantucket, Mass., St.
The new filing, signed in mid-November and made public recently on a state government website, also shows that the Tour’s finances rebounded in 2021 from the prior pandemic-depressed year, with revenues soaring 37% to $1.59 billion, from $1.16 billion in 2020.The Tour’s financial resources—and how it spends its money—have been placed in a spotlight over the past year.
In the latest tax filing, the Tour said that “in some cases,” top officials may use first class or charter travel for business or personal use based on security, privacy and other concerns, and specifically mentioned its own corporate jet for the first time. The Tour also said for the first time in a public filing that its governing board requires the commissioner to use charter flights for all travel, business and personal, for the same reasons.Copyright ©2022 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
