PennDOT says Route 581 has ‘completely reopened’ following Saturday’s 70-plus car pileup

Westbound lanes reopened around 6 p.m., according to PennDOT, but now the eastbound lanes have reopened as well.

The pileup was first reported around 2 p.m. around mile marker 7. The cause of the crash, which occurred in the day’s snowy conditions, has not been determined.

PennDOT traffic cam shows a crash on 581 east, between exit 5 to Gettysburg/Camp Hill and exit 6 to Interstate 83 south toward York, Saturday afternoon, March 2, 2022. First responders helped move as many as 100 people from the pileup to the New Cumberland Borough Fire Department where they were provided food, water and allowed to warm up while waiting on family and friends to pick them up.
