Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a French-born mariner with decades of diving experience and a leading expert on the Titanic, was aboard the missing tourist submersible.
According to the website, Nargeolet has led several expeditions to the Titanic, completed dozens of dives in the submersible himself, and supervised the recovery of thousands of artifacts, including a 20-ton section of the Titanic’s hull.

"When you’re in very deep water, you’re dead before you realize that something is happening, so it’s just not a problem," he said. The submersible, operated by OceanGate Expeditions and carrying five people to document the wreckage of the Titanic, was reported overdue Sunday night about 435 miles south of St. John's, Newfoundland, according to Canada's Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
