As far as Hosmer is concerned, the first month of the season has been generally kind to him in San Diego as he posted an .848 OPS in April 2018, a .750 OPS in April 2019 and an .844 OPS in April 2021.
Hosmer also hit .302/.356/.583 in his first 25 games in the COVID-19-shortened season in 2020, which occurred through the end of July through the end of August.Meantime, Profar’s strong start runs counter to his career trend as he has a career .614 OPS, the worst of any month of his career. He has never had an OPS better than .700 in the first month of the season, including .697 OPS he posted through August 2020.
Hosmer is hitting sixth on Tuesday, while Profar is giving way for Matt Beaty’s second start in left field. The 28-year-old Beaty was 1-for-4 in his lone start in Arizona.
