It was another day in which the Padres gripped their bats into sawdust and shriveled under the weight of what they are supposed to be. The Padres were 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position, 0-for-3 with the bases loaded, scored just one run in their four chances with a runner at third base and less than two outs and ended one inning with an ill-advised attempt to score on a pitch that sailed to the backstop but bounced directly back to Royals catcher Salvador Perez.

A pair of one-out walks yielded nothing when Fernando Tatis Jr. grounded into an inning-ending double play.
