We recommend Rachel McGowan for the District 5 board seat previously held by former Richardson ISD School Board President Karen Clardy. The past two years have been particularly tumultuous for school district parents and administrators. School board meetings became extremely combative as parents split over mask mandates and a district effort led by then-Superintendent Jeannie Stone, a solid, well-respected educational reformer, to embrace diversity and expand inclusivity within Richardson schools. Clardy resigned, citing the board’s lack of support for Stone’s efforts.
A business account executive and a strong supporter of Stone, McGowan could help Richardson regain its footing and refocus on educating children from diverse economic and racial backgrounds. McGowan, 43, was a student in the district and has served on various PTA initiatives. She demonstrates an impressive command of district issues and a calm, thoughtful demeanor that could improve academic achievement and reduce cultural and political discord in the district.
McGowan says selecting a new superintendent who embraces transparency, inclusion and high academic standards is key to making sure that the district lifts up all students and targets resources to low-performing schools.Richardson Independent School District Trustee - District 5
