La Jolla Playhouse and Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego are partnering on the walk-through experience inspired by the Mexican sport of lucha libre masked wrestling
Having previously explored the Mexican myth of the ghostly La Llorona , Mexican girls’ coming-of-age parties and Mexican party traditions , David Israel Reynoso is now diving into the world of lucha libre, the Mexican sport of freestyle masked wrestling.
The world-premiere project is a presentation of La Jolla Playhouse’s Without Walls Festival, in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego. The hourlong show is being presented as an offsite WOW event, with ticketed preview performances April 27-30, followed by a full run May 11 through June 4. All performances take place at MCASD Downtown’s Joan and Irwin Jacobs Building.
“On this surrealistic journey your senses are activated,” Reynoso explained. “You’re moving through a space. Something about it unlocks something in our human mind, in our psyche if you will. You connect with the performers in a deep and meaningful way,” he said. “It’s very important for me,” said Reynoso, “that you as an individual lose yourself in this experience for a moment. You forget the building you’ve entered. You have no idea where you are. It’s like a journey to a new land. It can become a communal one when suddenly you start telling others about what you saw. That’s very much part of this design.
