Opinion: Will San Diego embrace bicycling once the infrastructure is in place? [Opinion]
In time, will a biking culture emerge? I’m skeptical. San Diego’s topography is not conducive to bicycle commuting. Further, we’re not as densely populated as, say, Amsterdam, where bicyclists rule.Yes, it would be nice if the bike lanes were packed. But change doesn’t happen overnight. The toilet, invented as early as 1596, wasn’t commonplace until the 1900s. The European spike in cycling came with an increase in bike-friendly infrastructure.
When my son cycled to school two decades ago, 10 bikes dotted the racks — today, with e-bikes for navigating hilly terrain, there are 200. Why is it a special interest if those of us who occupy less space, stay healthier from exercising and don’t pollute also ask for safe riding conditions? Yes, more cyclists should obey the rules. Yes, we cyclists are focused because we’re tired of getting killed while drivers stare at their phones. No, we are not well-funded.
Our reward: the smile on the face of our youth independently transporting themselves to school with the breeze on their faces and the power in their legs.
