Opinion: Veterinary care regulations that limit telehealth for pets in California are unnecessary [Opinion]
it’s imperative that states update their laws. Just as California empowers human doctors to make these decisions, it should also legally and professionally empower licensed veterinarians to determine when to use telehealth in their practices. In many instances, the use of telehealth can be a vital service for pets and the people who love them.
Research shows that clinical examinations are stressful for many pets. In a clinical setting, dogs and cats often become fearful and withdrawn and — in situations they perceive as threatening — may mask their pain as a survival response. Using modern telehealth technology, a licensed veterinarian can view animals in their comfortable home environments, which may be more informative and productive than seeing an animal in a hyper-anxious state.
Telehealth can also expand access to essential veterinary care, especially for pet owners in remote or urban underserved areas with few or no veterinarians and those who face financial, geographic and logistical obstacles getting pets to a clinic.
