Opinion: School mask mandates aren't fair to students with disabilities [Opinion]

After two years of the COVID-19 pandemic and amid an apparent downturn in cases and hospitalizations, school districts are operating in unknown territory, self-navigating through ambiguous and, more often than not, less than helpful guidance from the state. California’s school districts, generally open for at least optional in-person learning, still must operate under health and safety protocols from state and federal agencies.

Now we see California lowering the state’s requirement to one that is only recommended for schools. In July, the state Department of Public Health argued that its guidance requiring masks was grounded in allowing all students to have a safe and full in-person instruction for the school year. Without debating the merits of that guidance, a mask mandate has always run afoul of addressing the needs of some students with disabilities.

There are other options that provide some measure of protection for teachers and other students. Moving the classroom setting outside whenever possible with at least 3 feet of social distancing between students, increasing the space between student desks indoors or increased personal protective equipment for staff are some of them. Yes, they all come at a cost. But so does locking the door to some of our most vulnerable students.
