Opinion: San Diego's bayfront doesn't need more amusements. It needs calm. [Opinion]
Operators of Star of India proposing $28M maritime museum to be built over San Diego Bay
” : Another bad bayfront idea. Did the public want to see a Ferris wheel instead of Seaport Village? No, because that space is really a pleasant park area in a booming, bustling city. Farther north is the Star of India, which was built in 1863. It’s another park-like space that brings on a feeling of relaxation. The area where it is moored had tuna boats tied up alongside, even in the 1980s. It was real. You knew because the guard dogs on board would bark at you. The fishing had to go, but developers didn’t jump on the space to make a buck.
I’m afraid the maritime museum is just another concept intended to rake in tourist dollars while replacing calm with an amusement park frenzy of commercial activity. What is the next step planned for the vacated space where the boats were? A Ripley’s Believe It or Not! and a wax museum? Watch out for that as planners have said their first priority is to generate more income from the area.
