Opinion: Kensington should get to keep its historic street lights [Opinion]
A fight over antique streetlamps has come to Kensington. Is it a warning for other historic neighborhoods?
” : I thought that the city of San Diego’s climate action plan called for the reuse and rehab of existing assets. So why is the city working to replace more than 50 historic streetlights in Kensington with new fixtures at twice the price of restoration? Lead-based paint did not stop the restoration of the streetlights in Mission Hills or Talmadge. That excuse for demolition is not valid.
In 2014, Kensington residents approved increasing our property taxes to create a maintenance assessment district to maintain and restore the historic streetlights. Not one cent has been spent on this project. Now the city is disrespecting our commitment by secretly planning to rip out the historic lights and replace them at twice the cost of restoration.
What else is it doing to waste money? I can think of plenty of things, according to recent headlines.
