Amid so much impunity, the investigations of Martínez and Lourdes Maldonado, a Tijuana journalist who was killed six days after Martínez, were the only cases among the journalists killed last year that reached convictions for the perpetrators. That will be more than one year after the murders of Martínez and Maldonado, one year after Maldonado’s perpetrators were arrested and 11 months after the same happened in Martínez’s case.
In December, José Heriberto Ochoa “El Huesos” and Adrián Nicolás Ramos “El Uber” were sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing Martínez, and the third detainee, Cristian Adán Velázquez “El Cabo 16,” opted to go to trial. That will begin at the end of April. Both hearings lasted several hours, and the five now-convicted murderers looked disinterested in what was being said. With their microphones turned off, you could not hear what they were saying, but they talked among themselves and even laughed in front of Maldonado’s and Martínez’s families.
