OPINION: If Governor Gavin Newsom is serious about helping all Californians, he needs to take major steps to transition California’s transportation system toward zero-emission technologies.

: Use the state’s budget surplus to provide Californians with an across-the-board rebate for relief from all rising costs, not just gas.

However, singling out a fossil fuel to frame a tax rebate is unnecessary and in contradiction to California’s — and the governor’s — climate goals.because of the surges in gas prices and are, of course, passing those profits on to their executives. California’s government should focus on taking on greedy polluters, not subsidizing them.

Outside of the Legislature, the governor can double down on electric vehicles. He should pressure the California Air Resources Board to pass thethat ramps up zero-emission vehicle sales as quickly as possible before reaching 100% by 2035.
