Opinion: Convoy-area businesses should pay for their own welcome sign [Opinion]
. We need thousands of shelter beds for our homeless residents. The Ash Street asbestos debacle is costing taxpayers a small fortune. Our public restrooms, especially in Balboa Park, are a disgrace. Our streets and sidewalks are in constant need of repair, and some residents don’t even have sidewalks.
The list of basic needs and indebtedness goes on and on and on. But in their wisdom, our mayor and City Council are spending $1.5 million of our tax money for a “welcome” sign to promote business on Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa. If any commercial area can afford its own welcome sign, it’s the Convoy area, with its lucrative vehicle dealerships, popular restaurants, busy shops and planned commercial-retail-residential projects. Our city simply can’t afford to promote business that can easily pay their own way.
