Commentary: Over the last year, many major retailers are reporting that their “shrinkage,” or shoplifting, rates have dropped markedly in their Oak Brook stores while the theft rate in stores outside of Oak Brook remains high.

— might as well have been part of the same paper.

In noting that criminals have taken full advantage of lax prosecutorial efforts by the Cook County state’s attorney’s office, the July 13 editorial states: “The criminals, in short, have been winning, making it increasingly difficult for brick-and-mortar stores to stage a post-pandemic comeback, adding to the surge in inflation and contributing to a belief that urban downtowns are too dangerous for everyday people to work and shop there.

Over the last year or so, Oak Brook has taken a decidedly more proactive approach to criminal apprehension and enforcement. In partnership with Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and his Organized Retail Crime Task Force, we have invested heavily in such resources as undercover police units, camera technology, drones, a K-9 unit and GPS tracking systems. Oak Brook supports and loves its police, and in turn, they enjoy doing their job.

We promote our crime-fighting successes to get the word out to other criminals to stay away from Oak Brook and DuPage County. The results speak for themselves. Over the last year, many major retailers are reporting that their “shrinkage,” or shoplifting, rates have dropped markedly in their Oak Brook stores while the theft rate in stores outside of Oak Brook remains high. Meanwhile, sales at the Oakbrook Center shopping mall and other local stores and restaurants are booming.

The July 10 editorial praises the increasing vibrancy and attractiveness of DuPage County. It’s not by chance. It takes resolve that starts with zero tolerance for crime.Laurence Herman is the village president of Oak Brook.
