Let us take a step back to assess our local, national, and global identities and reflect upon what obligations we as Hoosiers have to each other and the world, writes Indianapolis resident Eric Shea.

As we breathe a collective sigh of relief after having survived yet another politically polarized election cycle and look forward to gathering together this holiday season, let us take a step back to assess our local, national and global identities and reflect upon what obligations we as Hoosiers have to each other and the world.

We are simultaneously Hoosiers and global citizens. It is not only possible to retain our identity as citizens of Indiana and the United States while also recognizing our obligation to the broader world, it is required. Hoosier workers contribute to the global economy by exporting tens of billions worth ofthat feed, clothe and satisfy the material needs of people across the globe.

Such obligations to foreign strangers are especially relevant when considering political questions and legislation surrounding migrants. Once again, existing hardline political solutions are impractical as unrestricted migrations presents widespread logistical issues while draconian restrictions on migration would be both economically devastating and downright uncompassionate.
