by Jerry Mitchell, Mississippi Today September 11, 2023 Sept. 11, 1963 Statues honoring the trio who broke the color barrier at the University of South Carolina are being constructed by sculptor Basil Watson. Henrie Monteith Treadwell, Robert Anderson, and James Solomon led the desegregation of the University of South Carolina, the first Black students to do so since Reconstruction. Two weeks earlier, a bomb exploded near Treadwell’s home to scare her from enrolling.
