We're taking ownership of who we are and how we cover life in Indianapolis.
In 1945, the Indianapolis Star hired Lowell Nussbaum. He wrote features about people and what it meant to live here and often voiced his idea that a zoo in Indianapolis would improve the quality of life. So,In 1978, when a blizzard shut down our city, Star staffers were stuck in the newsroom.
We are taking ownership of who we are and how we should cover the news in Indianapolis. Our revised mission statement sprouts from the newsroom's heart — writers, photographers, videographers, producers and support staff who work every day to make this community better. We discussed and wrote it together. Newsroom leadership, including me, approved it.
This concept isn't new to us — a previous version of our mission statement spoke to our role in covering the diversity of Central Indiana and creating an inclusive newsroom environment — but this is the first time we've said it to you in this way. This new mission statement embodies IndyStar's principles and values. It tells you who we are and lays the foundation of how we report Indianapolis news with solutions in mind.
