“At no point in my life, at no point in my children's life, will I ever celebrate that part of my history. There's no point in celebrating an individual that created harm and did such harmful things,” Johnson said at a Wednesday morning press conference highlighting the bill. “This isn't — and shouldn't be — a partisan issue. This is a human issue. This is a moral issue. This is not red or blue, this is right or wrong,” said Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, a San Antonio Democrat who chairs the House Democratic Caucus.
On the other hand, Republicans have advanced legislation restricting how slavery and systemic racism can be discussed in Texas public schools. The legislation was known as the “Critical Race Theory Bill,” using that term to decry classroom teachings, children’s books aimed at Black youth and diversity hiring initiatives, among other things.
In response to a letter from state Senate Democrats, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick wrote: “We know the issue of slavery is painful to everyone. It was a sad chapter in our history. But we also know that most Texans do not support erasing our history by the removal of monuments and symbols.”
