A new $686 million federal grant program sent millions of dollars to NJ Transit and PATH to improve access to stations for riders with mobility issues.

including grants for NJ Transit and PATH, is just the beginning of a national effort to make older rail and subway stations accessible to all, from people using canes and walkers to parents pushing children in strollers.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said accessibility covers more than the one in seven people in the U.S. population who have mobility issues. “The application of these grants will depend on what stage the projects are in, but clearly the intent is the transit agency identified grants that they could guarantee completing the project within five years or so,” Fernandez said.

A smaller $1.4 million grant for the Chatham and Orange stations on the Morris & Essex lines funds study and design of new high level platforms at those stations. Built in the early 20th century, these stations currently do not have any elevators to enter or exit the station mezzanine or platforms.
