The fate of landmark Brick Church in East Orange is uncertain, with a big pile of rubble on part of the site
and began taking down the building, a jolt to historic-minded residents who would rather see the old house of worship preserved.
Brick Church is not part of the Crossings project, but there has been talk of allowing apartments to be built within the facade of old house of worship. Although there was no approved redevelopment plan, East Orange nonetheless issued a demolition permit to Brick Church LLC. Jackson said demolition permits can be issued without an approved redevelopment plan.
Judge Lisa Adubato refused to grant the injunction at a hearing on April 24, but the demolition has not resumed. Less than three weeks later, Brick Church LLC sold the property to another real estate developer, Seven Prospect Street LLC of New Hyde Park, N.Y. for $2.7 million, deed records show.
