After flash flooding washed out part of the I-10 in California, officials are hopeful the interstate can be fully reopened early next week. abc15

The flooding began Wednesday evening amid the latest round of monsoonal thunderstorms to hit the region this summer. The damaged roadway was part of a detour past a repair project along eastbound Interstate 10 near the small community of Desert Center, about 165 miles east of Los Angeles.

In the meantime, officials recommend for motorists leaving Southern California to use Interstates 8 or 40, which are major detours. A 2015 flash flood in the same area washed out a bridge on the eastbound side of I-10 and eroded the ground under the westbound bridge, closing the interstate for nearly a week as the westbound bridge was repaired. The eastbound side did not reopen for weeks.
