A D.C. police officer exchanged gunfire in Southeast Washington late Saturday with someone who was armed, a police official said.
At about 1 a.m. Sunday, police said they were continuing to investigate, but had not found anyone who had been struck.Officers had been sent to the area of 5th and Mellon streets SE about 10:30 p.m. after receiving a report about the sound of shots, said assistant police chief Jeffrey Carroll.
While canvassing an alley, an officer came upon someone who “discharged a firearm,” Carroll said. The officer “returned fire,” Carroll said.The site is a couple of blocks west of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE in a residential area of single-family houses, duplexes and small apartment houses.
