Elgin Public Museum’s Dia de los Muertos event took a dramatic turn Saturday when a man who had apparently overdosed was found on the museum grounds in Lords Park.
The natural history museum at 225 Grand Blvd. was hosting its first celebration of the Hispanic honoring the dead tradition since 2020 when a board member was told there was a body lying in the leaves outside, museum Director Sharry Lynn Blazer said.She initially thought the figure was a scarecrow and then worried someone might have died, Blazer said.
“I truly thought the guy was dead,” she said “Could we actually have a dead guy out there on Day of the Dead?”“ gave him some nasal spray of Narcan, and it sprung him out of it,” Blazer said.Firefighters and police officers are trained to look for signs of a drug overdose, which can be reversed by using naloxone, commercially known as Narcan, said Sgt. Mike Martino, public information officer for the Elgin Police Department.
Elgin police were among the first in the area to have officers carry the treatment, which has “absolutely saved lives,” Martino said. In 2021, police handled 88 nonfatal and 12 fatal overdoses, police department data shows. “We were just out of our minds thinking what a horrible thing to have happened,” Blazer said. “If it hadn’t been for everyone’s quick actions, he may have died.
