Nataki Garrett , the first Black artistic director at the renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival, wants to make more people like her feel welcome there.

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival has long had a special relationship with the Bay Area. Intrepid local theatergoers often make the pilgrimage up to Ashland, Oregon, to see shows, and many actors and directors work in both regions. And now OSF has an artistic leader who grew up in Oakland.

A big part of her mission at OSF is inviting people to the prestigious theater presenter who might not have felt invited before. Garrett’s theater career has been almost entirely outside of the Bay Area, though she returned to direct Katori Hall’s “Hurt Village” for Oakland Theater Project in 2016 and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ “Everybody” for California Shakespeare Theater in 2018.
