A man allegedly smashing a woman's walls shot an NYPD cop in the foot and led others on a chase, during which he was wounded, in Brooklyn this morning, police officials say. Here's the latest on the Bed-Stuy investigation.
A veteran NYPD officer was shot in the foot and a suspect wounded during a struggle -- and then a brief police chase -- following a call about a man smashing a woman's wall in Brooklyn Wednesday, authorities say.
The officer, who has seven years with the force, was one of four who responded to a 911 call from a woman at a Gates Avenue apartment building in Bedford-Stuyvesant shortly before 9 a.m. Police said at a late-morning news briefing that a woman had called 911 saying her male friend was damaging her third-floor apartment wall and refusing to leave. The wounded officer and three others were met in front of the building by the duo when they arrived at the scene. After an investigation, it was determined the man would be arrested on a criminal mischief charge, NYPD officials said. A struggle ensued as the officers tried to handcuff him.
The officers confronted the suspect on Monroe Street and shots were exchanged. NYPD officers fired six times -- one of the two cops on foot fired five bullets, the other fired one -- and the suspect was hit twice in the thigh. He fired three shots in total during the fray, police officials said. Two shell casings were recovered from the Monroe Street scene and another was recovered from in front of the Gates Avenue apartment building. A handgun was also recovered.
Officials said they were awaiting trace results on the weapon, but it had not been reported stolen. They identified the suspect as a 41-year-old Brooklyn man with 17 prior arrests in Georgia between 1998 and 2014. Most were for low-level drugs and a DWI, but officials said he also was cuffed twice on weapons-related charges -- in 2005 and 2007.
