The Nuggets are allowing 114.8 points per 100 possessions, ranking 26th in the NBA. Only four of the league’s worst teams — Spurs, Pistons, Rockets and Magic — are below Denver.
That’s not good news for the Nuggets, who have designs on being an elite team but know they won’t get there unless they evict the elephant.
That’s a step backward and not what the Nuggets envisioned when they acquired Aaron Gordon in a trade in March of 2021 and added Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Bruce Brown during this past offseason. The Nuggets’ defense has indeed been better in the fourth quarter most of this season, allowing 26.2 points per game, which ranks 11th. But they can’t turn the intensity on and off if they want to reach the next level.
