Now New York City is suing Hyundai and Kia over thefts.

The announcement sees New York join a number of other major cities across the United States currently taking legal action against Hyundai and Kia. Those major population centers include Cleveland, Milwaukee, Baltimore, Seattle, and San Diego. The lawsuits come after a popularhighlighted the process involved with stealing a Hyundia or Kia product, which can supposedly be done with as little as a USB cable.

“A subset of Hyundai vehicles on the road in the U.S. today – primarily “base trim” or entry-level models – are not equipped with push-button ignitions and immobilizing anti-theft devices," the automaker said in a written statement according to an . "It is important to clarify that an engine immobilizer is an anti-theft device and these vehicles are fully compliant with federal anti-theft requirements,”Thefts of Hyundai and Kia products more than doubled in NYC in 2022, with no signs of slowing down as we move through 2023. During the first four months of the year, there were 977 reported thefts related to Hyundai and Kia products. That number sat at 148 reports during the same time period in 2022.

NYC is seeking unspecified damages as a result of the suit, targeting both compensatory and punitive actions. In February, Hyundai and Kia announced plans to upgrade the software in as many as 8.3 millions cars without immobilizer systems. That didn’t quell concerns however, with a class action settlement worth $200 million being signed just last month over the issue.The case is City of New York v Hyundai Motor America et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 23-04772.
