Now is the time for those at higher risk from COVID-19 to get a second booster dose, Los Angeles County’s public health director said, citing less-than-ideal overall vaccination rates along with concerns swirling around the rapid spread of the highly contagious BA.2 Omicron subvariant.
Ferrer made the comments days after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made another booster dose available to adults age 50 and over, as well as those age 12 and up who have weakened immune systems. “These gaps in vaccination coverage create a lot of risk” of coronavirus transmission, Ferrer said. “We have enough transmission that you don’t really want to be increasing your risk.”
