Timing remains a major hurdle when it comes to scheduling baseball, softball playoffs beyond the regional championships
Three years ago, California state sports officials were hopeful that regional baseball and softball playoffs would eventually morph into true state championships.It’s all about timing. And until all of California’s 10 CIF sections get on the same schedule, there is little chance of a true state playoff in baseball and softball.“Until the season end dates line up, the state is going to leave the playoffs the way they are,” said CIF-San Diego Section Commissioner Joe Heinz.
If San Diego were to move up its playoffs to match Southern Section schools, graduations, proms and AP testing would come into play. The sharing of athletes is a main reason Heinz said the San Diego Section is against moving up its season. The state CIF’s long-range plan is to have state championships in all sports. That, however, may take another four to five years.
