A Nogales teen is bridging the digital divide among Latinos in the cross-border community

His courses show senior residents how to FaceTime with loved ones and teach others to enhance their resumes to secure a job.
Ruiz, alongside Gerardo Lopez, associate extension specialist at 4-H STEM Youth Development, thought Becerril's community work should be recognized nationwide and urged him to apply. Becerril had to submit an essay and a short video as part of his application before going through a round of interviews.
As he translated the courses, he added bits of information and materials that he felt were absent from the curriculum. Becerril began offering classes on how to use your cell phone, create a Zoom meeting, search for jobs online and create a secure password.“I redesigned the entire program to reach people in the community here in Nogales,” Becerril said.compared to 80% of their White counterpartsWhile immigrants account for roughly one-sixth of U.S.
He aspires to become a civil engineer and is attending construction equipment operation classes at the Pima Joint Technical Education District.Becerril said the classes are an important factor in community members gaining new skills and feeling confident in what they’re learning, he said.
