The concept that women shouldn't use foul language comes from old-fashioned gender roles...

," : When I entered first grade in 1963, I was introduced to an exciting and somewhat scary new world. One day I was running barefoot and shirtless across yards in my central Texas hometown without a care in the world, eating bologna sandwiches and drinking water out of the hose — any hose. And the next day I was overwhelmed with a Big Chief tablet, a pencil as big around as my wrist, the alphabet, and numerals. Suddenly I had to learn to read, and to keep my feet under the desk.

Two new grownups entered my realm that fall. My first-grade teacher, a young first-timer with tremendous patience, and our school librarian, a woman with incredible talents who unlocked the wonder of reading. The former helped me daily to focus on where my feet should remain and how to wrangle that foot-long writing utensil. The latter introduced me to the concept of how books transport readers to whole ‘nother worlds. On our first library day, she read out loud to us.

Later we were taught how to check out a book. It was an honor and a heavy responsibility. The tome I selected still ranks among the best books I’ve read in my 66 years: "One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish." On the last page, Dr. Seuss wrote 10 words that inform the way I live life even today. “Today is gone. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.” That pretty much says it all. I wish I could find that lady librarian and thank her.

I was the skinny, nerdy gay boy in a town of 6,800 in western Nebraska, and those free books and magazines got me through some tough times. I read every Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys book, and I can remember the Saturday afternoon when our city librarian let me peruse the adult section for the first time. I went right to the psychology section and discovered that I wasn't really abnormal after all.
