The Trojans, who haven’t posted a comprehensive victory since Week 3, have an opportunity to do that Saturday night versus the Golden Bears and build momentum
LOS ANGELES — Nine weeks into the college football season, and the first College Football Playoff rankings have come out. The 7-1 USC Trojans came in at ninth in the initial list, with the potential to add résumé wins over No. 12 UCLA in Week 12 and possibly against No. 8 Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game should both teams make it there.
Week 3 was the last such occurrence from USC. That was when USC beat Fresno State by 28. After a combined margin of victory of 93 in the first three wins of the year, USC’s past four wins have come by a margin of 44. At Oregon State, the defense was sensational but the offense practically nonexistent. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that USC put away Arizona State. The defense and rushing attack carried USC over Washington State as the pass game disappeared. Then the defense squandered the offense’s brilliance against Utah and nearly did so again versus Arizona.
“One of the pitfalls of a lot of teams is not staying focused on the moment at hand,” Riley said Tuesday. “To be honest, when it’s a program that maybe hasn’t won quite as much as of late, it’s honestly probably a little bit easier right now.”
