Veteran guard Marcus Carr lifted his team early in the second half, burying a pullup 3-pointer and long fallaway jumper to erase the deficit and give Texas its first lead of the night 37-36. But Rice wasn’t easily deflated — the Owls retook the lead three more times, slowing the pace and frustrating a Texas team that lacked its usual vigor.
Owls guard Quincy Olivari matched Carr with 28 points and Evee was up to 19 on 8-for-21 shooting before fouling out in overtime. “Once we got news of , you know, our focus and my focus was with our players and about our program,” Terry said. “I don’t have the privilege of being able to talk about a lot of things. I’m here to talk about basketball and a very competitive game that we had tonight.”
Terry left Texas to take over as Fresno State's head coach in April 2011. He led the Bulldogs to a 126-108 record with four 20-win seasons before leaving to become UTEP’s head coach in 2018. Terry is expected to serve as Texas’ acting head coach again Sunday afternoon when it faces Stanford at the American Airlines Center in the Pac-12 Coast-to-Coast Challenge.
A swipe and transition slam by Cunningham ignited the fans again and fueled a quick 8-1 spurt with about seven minutes remaining. But Rice kept finding open pockets on the floor, with guard Travis Evee slipping loose for consecutive 3s to put the Owls up 66-63 with fewer than five minutes left in regulation.
Beard wasn’t on the sideline for Texas’ comeback win. Or back in the locker room. Or pacing around the arena with a clipboard. That’s because earlier Monday, the Longhorns’ 49-year-old head coach was an inmate of the Travis County Jail.
