The Longhorns entered Saturday’s game against the Red Raiders having won six straight...

LUBBOCK, TEXAS - SEPTEMBER 24: Donovan Smith #7 of the Texas Tech Red Raiders celebrates his rushing touchdown with Brady Boyd #13 of the Texas Tech Red Raiders during the second half against the Texas Longhorns at Jones AT&T Stadium on September 24, 2022 in Lubbock, Texas. LUBBOCK — Flying tortillas and not-safe-for-work student section chants aside, Texas has historically found ways to win inside Texas Tech’s home.

All Texas’ second-year coach really cared about after going 1-4 on the road last season was finding a way to start 1-0 away from home and 1-0 in Big 12 play. Though redshirt freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers traveled with the team, suited up and went through pregame warmups, redshirt sophomore Hudson Card started for the second straight week. And Sarkisian drew up a doozy of an opening script for him.

Texas Tech marched right back downfield, staging a 17-play scoring drive extended by an ill-advised defensive pass interference on third-and-27. And in a play that looked similar to Texas’ first score, Smith fired a 17-yard touchdown pass to tailback Tahj Brooks to take a 14-10 lead. Junior halfback Bijan Robinson finished the drive off by dancing through a tangle of defenders for the 7-yard touchdown with just 24 seconds remaining in the first half.

After Smith slipped away from a few defenders on yet another fourth-down conversion, he fired a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Baylor Cupp to knot the game with 7:54 remaining.
